The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC) has organized a two-day leadership training for its Senior Management Staff in Accra, which was aimed at building capacity for effective service delivery.
The training was dubbed ‘Leadership and Good Governance, an Effective Tool for Organizational Management’ and was held from the 22nd and 23rd of May 2024.
Speaking at the event, Mr. John Yao Agbeko, Chief Director of the Ministry said as management, there was the need to sharpen the tools we work with hence the training. He added that the training would enable staff to resharpen any blunt tools that may affect the effective delivery of the functions of the various directorates in the ministry. He was hopeful that at the end of the training, there would be renewed energies for the task ahead.
On his part, Mr. Vitus-Otto Langmagne, Director of Human Resource Management, emphasized the need for management to go through periodic capacity building to be abreast with the global trends and urged participants to pay attention so that at the end there would be renewed knowledge.
Professor Randolph Nsor Ambala, a lead consultant at AGY Ambala Consult, took participants through the training indicating that leadership style should not be stereotyped as either good or bad. However, the best leaders are those who are adaptable.
Participants were taught the difference between Governance and Leadership, and the elements of Governance which included the ethical and sustainable approach, risk management, compliance, administration, and accountability.
He outlined some benchmarks for effective Governance to include a competent and dedicated workforce, participative decision, transparency, accountability, continuous monitoring and evaluation, coaching, and training.
Professor Ambala taught the various leadership styles such as the Servant Leadership approach which is people-centered and is used when dealing with Specialized or Highly Skilled workers, the Affirmative Leadership which works on the emotions of the worker, and the Democratic Style of leadership which considers the participation of workers and which creates a sense of ownership among workers and others such as the transformational leadership, transactional among others.
According to Prof. Ambala, for managers to adopt the best leadership approach, they need to do the following: assess their strengths or weaknesses, consider their teams’ dynamics and needs, reflect on the organizational culture, focus on continuous learning, and experiment with different styles.
Participants at the end of the training expressed gratitude to the facilitator for his ability to sustain the interest of the participants throughout the period.
