The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer has said that the growing importance of engaging with our global family and fostering cultural exchange is what will result in strengthening bonds that transcend borders.
He made these remarks when he addressed a gathering during the wreath-laying ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, after a similar activity earlier in the day at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre and the George Padmore Library, in Accra on July 25, 2024.
In his address, he underscored that the solemn act of wreath-laying serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our ancestors and the resilience they
displayed in the face of adversity.
He said it is important that we engage with our global family, and this will help foster cultural exchange and strengthen bonds that transcend borders. It is for this reason that His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo launched “Beyond the Return” as a ten-year project to consolidate the gains from the “Year of Return” to foster closer collaboration between the global African Family,” he added.
Emancipation Day marks the formal 1834 abolition of slavery in the British Empire and recognises Ghana’s pivotal role as a hub in the transatlantic slave trade.
The celebration will continue with similar events in certain parts of the country namely Assin Praso, Assin Manso, Cape Coast and Elmina.
