Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, has called for a revitalized approach to managing the National Theatre of Ghana, urging its leadership to strengthen its public engagement, foster creative programming, and build a more positive image of the institution. Her remarks came during a working visit by the theatre’s management team to the ministry, led by Executive Director Mr. Henry Herbert Malm.
The minister emphasized that the National Theatre plays a pivotal role in Ghana’s cultural and creative landscape, and as such, it must be aligned with broader national development priorities, including the Black Star Experience initiative and the proposed 24-hour economy. She stressed the importance of resolving internal challenges, improving institutional accountability, and actively shaping public perception to position the Theatre as a vibrant cultural hub.
In response, Mr. Herbert Malm acknowledged that the National Theatre continues to grapple with a range of operational and structural difficulties, adding that while some progress has been made in addressing longstanding issues, certain persistent concerns still demand attention and support of the Ministry to ensure the Theatre remains a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained cultural space.
The discussion also shed light on the need for enhanced stakeholder collaboration, greater transparency, and sustained institutional support to restore the National Theatre’s prominence in the cultural sector. Both the ministry and theatre leadership reaffirmed their commitment to working together to address these issues and create a more dynamic and accessible space for artistic expression.
Other key officials present at the meeting included Mr. Joseph K. Amoah, Chief Director of the Ministry; Mr. Divine Owusu Ansah, Director of Creative Arts; and Mr. Vitus Otto, Director of Human Resources at the Ministry. Their presence underscored the ministry’s collective resolve to back the Theatre’s transformation agenda.
