In furtherance of keeping abreast with issues and maintaining a listening ear to the rank-and-file in the sector, the Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer paid a visit to the Ghana Concert Party Union (GCPU) at the Art Centre in Accra on Thursday, 4th July 2024.
Concert Party which was once a household name in Ghana graced our screens and theatres with distinctive styles of expressing identities, aesthetics, symbols and underlying value orientations of Ghanaian practitioners and audiences. Constituting a professional group of actors that combined slapstick musical comedies, folk stories, acrobatics, moral sermons, magical displays and dance-music sessions, the group unearthed the country to an entertaining period of theatrical performances.
The crux of the engagement was the revival of the union and its activities. The Hon. Minister acknowledged the importance of their role since its inception, and how it birthed seasoned actors (now, mostly veterans) to benefit the country and its people.
Hon. Mercer assured the gathering of his directive to the leadership of the National Theatre to present to him, appropriate steps for the revival of the Union, for necessary action to be taken.
Among other things discussed were the need to establish a concert party television channel, refurbish the meeting place of the union, and make amphitheatres to be built, available for usage upon completion, to mention a few.
The President of the Union, Mr. Daniel K. Adu and his entire leadership and members commended the Minister and his team for their timely intervention and shared the readiness of the union whenever called upon by the Ministry.
